Steven Stylianos, MD
Chief of Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Steven Stylianos joined the practice in August, 2005 and was elected Chief of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Miami Children’s Hospital in 2006. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery with certifications in the areas of pediatric surgery, general surgery and surgical critical care. He is also Medical Director of the MCH Operating Room and the training director overseeing the Department of Pediatric Surgery’s academic programs, providing pediatric surgical training for residents from the University of Miami and Mount Sinai Medical Center.

A graduate of Rutgers University and the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Stylianos completed his general surgical training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He subsequently spent two years as the Trauma Fellow at the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute in Boston. He completed his pediatric surgical fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Stylianos’ clinical specialties include pediatric trauma, neonatal surgery and surgical oncology. He organized and directed the 50-member team of physicians and nurses who separated conjoined twins at Children’s Hospital of New York in 1993, 1995 and 2000. These conjoined twins’ separations have attracted the attention of the national media, including Dateline NBC, CBS’ 48 Hours and Fox News. Throughout the years, Dr. Stylianos has served as Chairman of the Trauma Committee for the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) from 1997 to 2002 and authored the APSA position paper supporting all measures to reduce the toll of firearm violence in children. The doctor also serves as the Co-Principal Investigator of the APSA Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau Partnership for Information and Communication Grant (#HO3MC0006), “Partnership for Development and Dissemination of Outcomes Measures for Injured Children.” Dr. Stylianos has lectured and published extensively, including authoring a number of books. He was named one of the “Best Doctors in New York” by New York magazine (2000-2005).

Cathy Burnweit, MD

Dr. Burnweit joined the staff of Miami Children’s Hospital in 1990. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Dr. Burnweit received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School where she graduated magna cum laude. Dr. Burnweit interned at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and received her residency training at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. She received her fellowship training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and is certified by the American Board of Surgery in general and pediatric surgery. Dr. Burnweit is a member of multiple professional medical organizations, has published numerous articles, and has made presentations around the world on pediatric surgery and pediatric oncology. She serves as a Co-Principal Investigator of the Children’s Oncology Group.She has special interests in childhood cancer, pectus excavatum, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, and neonatal surgery. She also serves as a physician-leader on the Miami Children’s Hospital Medical Executive Committee.

Leopoldo Malvezzi, MD

Dr. Malvezzi joined the practice in 1999. He received his medical degree at the Universitá degli Studi di Milano in Italy where he graduated cum laude. Dr. Malvezzi’s training included three months of research at Washington University Medical School and a research fellowship in vascular surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. Dr. Malvezzi then completed the general surgery residency at Morristown and received his board certification. Dr. Malvezzi completed his two–year pediatric surgery fellowship at Miami Children’s Hospital and returned briefly to Italy where he was successful in creating a pediatric surgery sectionat the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He has special interests in minimal access surgical procedures.

Colin Knight, MD

Dr. Knight joined the practice in 2007. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University. After receiving his medical degree at the University of Virginia, he served as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Dr. Knight completed his surgical residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and a research fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery. His pediatric surgery training was at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. Dr. Knight is board certified in general surgery and pediatric surgery. He is a member of many professional societies and has published a number of research articles as well as presenting at national and international meetings. Dr. Knight has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery and enjoys taking care of neonates, infants, children, and teenagers.

Michel H. Nahmad, MD
Founding Member

Dr. Michel H. Nahmad established the practice of the pediatric surgical group at Miami Children’s Hospital in 1972. Since his arrival to Miami Children’s Hospital in 1972, Dr. Nahmad has served terms on the Board of Directors both as a member and a Vice Chairman, was elected President of the Medical Staff, has served several terms on the Medical Executive Committee and was previous Chief of the Department of Pediatric Surgery. He previously served as Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and is presently Chairman of the Miami Children’s Hospital Bylaws Committee. Dr. Nahmad has recently assumed other responsibilities. As a member of the pediatric surgical team, he will continue to teach, work on programmatic initiatives and administrative responsibilities.

Charles A. Lankau, MD
Founding Member

Dr. Charles Lankau retired in June 2005. He began his pediatric surgical career at Miami Children’s Hospital in 1974, when he teamed up with Dr. Michel H. Nahmad. Besides establishing a busy pediatric surgical practice he was one of the pioneers at Miami Children’s Hospital in developing a pediatric urologic practice. Dr. Lankau was past President of the Medical Staff, and was Chief of the Department of Pediatric Surgery from 1974 to 2005.

Malvin Weinberger, MD
Founding Member

Dr. Malvin Weinberger retired from the practice of pediatric surgery in August of 2007. Dr. Weinberger arrived in Miami in 1972 and was an attending physician at the University of Miami and then served in private practice before joining Drs. Nahmad and Lankau at Miami Children’s Hospital in June of 1976. During his tenure at Miami Children’s, he served as President of the Medical Staff, as a Medical Executive Committee member and as Medical Director of the hospital’s state-designated, Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.
